Scientific Breakthroughs in Yellow Fever Vaccines

Yellow fever is a serious mosquito-borne viral disease that causes tens of thousands of deaths each year, especially in areas of sub-Saharan Africa and South America. An effective vaccine for yellow fever has been around for years, but ongoing scientific advances continue to bring new discoveries. In this article, we will discuss some important breakthroughs in yellow fever vaccines.

   17D vaccine

A breakthrough in the fight against yellow fever was the introduction of the 17D vaccine in the 1930s. This vaccine was created by weakening the yellow fever virus, which was done by Max Theiler, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1951.

The 17D vaccine is extremely effective, with one dose providing lifelong protection for 99% of vaccinated individuals. Because of its effectiveness, it has been used to date and is the standard for yellow fever prevention.

   New vaccination strategies

Despite the efficacy of the 17D vaccine, its availability is sometimes limited, especially in areas with a high risk of the disease. As a result, the WHO suggested in 2016 a fractional-dose strategy as a fallback measure in case of vaccine shortages. This strategy, which involves administering smaller doses of the vaccine, has proven effective in protecting against the disease.

   Study on new vaccines

Although the 17D vaccine is effective, scientists are still researching new vaccines. The goal is to create a vaccine that is just as effective but safer, especially for immunocompromised people. Currently, there are several vaccines in various clinical phases that show promising results.

Yellow fever vaccines vs. COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many planned yellow fever vaccination campaigns to be postponed. In addition, there are several studies that suggest that existing yellow fever vaccines may have some effect against SARS-CoV-2, although these results are preliminary and require further research.

In summary, the yellow fever vaccine is one of the most important tools in controlling this dangerous disease. Scientific breakthroughs, both past and present, are critical to protecting millions of people around the world
